Reformer Pilates: What to Expect in Your First Class

Walking into your first Pilates class can feel a little intimidating…new equipment, new movements, new faces and maybe even a new vocabulary. But don’t worry—we’ve all been there! If you’re gearing up for your first class (or just curious), here’s what you can expect:

1. A Warm Welcome

When you enter SCS Pilates, you’ll be greeted by our friendly front desk team and/or instructors in the studio. Arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can show you around the studio, help you fill out any necessary forms, and chat about any injuries or goals you have.

2. An Intro to the Equipment

In the beginning of class you will be introduced to the Pilates Reformer machine. It looks complex, but your instructor will walk you through it step by step. You’ll learn how the springs, carriage, straps, and footbar work—and how to adjust everything for your personalized workout.

3. Focus on the Core (But Not Just Abs!)

Pilates is all about controlled movement, proper alignment, and core engagement. You’ll hear cues like “engage your core,” “neutral spine,” and “inhale to prepare, exhale to move.” Don’t stress if it feels like a foreign language at first but it will click over time and eventually you will feel all movements in your body the more you come to classes.

4. Small, Intentional Movements

Unlike high-impact workouts, Pilates is low-impact and emphasizes small, precise movements that target specific muscle groups. You might feel like you’re “not doing much,” but trust us—you’ll feel it the next day (hello, muscles you didn’t know existed).

5. Modifications Are Always Welcome

Pilates is for every body. Whether you're super active or just starting out, your instructor will offer modifications and guidance to make sure you feel supported and safe throughout the class. The instructors at SCS Pilates teach their classes based on their clients and can easily help you adjust springs and positions to help you and your body.

6. How to Dress and What to Bring

  • You are welcome to wear any type of fitness apparel that you feel comfortable in. Whether its fitted or a loose baggy t-shirt. Choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Wearing fitted workout clothes will allow your instructor to see your body alignment and help cue and correct you better. Avoid options with zippers so we can avoid tears on the reformers.

  • Grip socks are highly recommended for safety on the reformers.

  • At SCS Pilates, we offer a variety of grip socks and apparel for purchase if you ever forget your own gear or want to add more to your closet!

  • Bring a water bottle and a positive mindset—we’ll take care of the rest.

7. Expect to Leave Feeling Taller, Lighter, and Stronger

Most people leave their first class feeling more aligned, more aware of their posture, and often a little taller. Pilates helps you build a deeper connection between your mind and body—something that only gets stronger with time. The first class can be a lot at once and the more you start coming, the more you will connect your mind with your body.

Final Thoughts

Your first class is just the beginning of an amazing journey toward strength, flexibility, and confidence. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
